True Eyes!
When Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body,” in his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:22), he meant the physical eye. Of course, I would never argue with Jesus on that score. Actually, I would affirm him. The eye in all ways is the lamp of the body. But for me, it’s the eye of the spirit, the eye that allows me to see beyond what the world sees in many aspects. Jesus goes on to talk about the whole body being filled with either light or darkness, depending on how wide open your eyes are.
I have found my eyes continually open, even as a totally blind person in the ministry. The greatest blessing I’ve been given so far is God’s gift of no vision. It allows me to form lasting relationships, appreciate the depth of music, and relish even the ordinary moments of working and ministering heart-to-heart with individuals in a wonderful variety of environments and unique circumstances.
Truth be told, I would not be the man—let alone the minister—I have been, am now, or ever will be had God not gifted me with the treasure of blindness. All of us can be physically blind or sighted, and that is important to realize. However, the deeper question is, are we spiritually blind or sighted? Is our whole body full of light or darkness? I pray as we live our lives, we will not see anyone as different but see each person for the gifted and godly treasure they truly are.
As you live, as you interact with the world around you, do you have your eyes wide open? Is your whole body full of light or darkness? Do you have true eyes, the eyes of God within you, leading you, always guiding you?
To God be the glory indeed!
