Relying on the Guiding Light of Christ

Where am I going? What am I doing? These two questions linger figuratively in my mind, as I’m a pastor serving a congregation in the middle of nowhere. But they are also literal questions I ask when I am in a new environment. I must consider how I can find physical help to get around. As a blind person, I must see the world in a completely different way, while still being able to navigate my physical surroundings.

I’m sure the wise men had the same struggle on their journey toward Jesus, wondering where they should go and what they should do. They had been given instructions to go, and they went, not exactly knowing where the journey would lead.

It’s up to us, dear friends, to know God provides people to help us—Christ-like lights to guide the way. As someone with a disability, I must remember that everyone needs help at some point, and there’s no shame in admitting we cannot navigate the world on our own. We truly must rely on our Guide, our Light.

For blind persons, this might look like grabbing an arm or using a cane and following the footsteps of sighted people. For the wise men, this included following the bright star to Bethlehem to find the birth town of Jesus. For all of us, when navigating the unknowns, we can lean on each other and look to the guiding light of God to light our path. We need not fear; see, our guide is always here!
